Profile:Mr. James W. McCartney is a trial attorney and a Senior Associate in the Firm’s Litigation Department and currently acts as its Sub-Director, responsible for overseeing all federal litigation within the Department. Mr. McCartney’s practice is focused on federal litigation representing banks, insurers, and large and small businesses located in Puerto Rico, the U.S., and abroad, in complex cases in the areas of: construction and bond disputes, RICO actions, insurance coverage matters, product liability, personal injury, claims of inadequate security at commercial shopping centers, employment discrimination and civil rights cases, intellectual property, admiralty and maritime cases, and bankruptcy matters, among others. He has successfully conducted numerous jury trials to verdict and has briefed and argued cases before the state and federal appellate courts. He also has extensive experience representing clients before state and federal administrative agencies and in arbitration and mediation. In particular, Mr. McCartney had the opportunity to play a significant role in the Humberto Vidal gas explosion case, in which 33 persons were killed and 99 injured; and in the North Coast Superaqueduct case, in which multiple parties litigated the cause of the collapse of a 60” water pipeline that caused millions of dollars in damages. Mr. McCartney started his career with the New Jersey firm of Slimm, Dash & Goldberg, where he gained valuable experience representing primarily insurance companies in defense litigation. Later he joined the boutique firm of Wilbraham, Lawler & Buba, LLP, in Philadelphia, where he litigated insurance coverage, toxic tort, environmental and insurance fraud cases before the state and federal courts. Prior to joining the Firm in 1998, Mr. McCartney worked as an associate in the San Juan law firm of Jimenez, Graffam & Lausell.
